Week 7 Discussion Post

October 7, 2014

Let’s build up everyone’s list of resources to turn to with this week’s discussion!

  1. Why is it important to pay attention to whether an image is royalty-free or licensed?
  2. What is your favorite:
    1. stock photo site? What about it do you like?
    2. font website?
    3. other download site? (i.e. styles, brushes, actions etc)

Include links for these please.!

When using any imagery for a project, it’s important to know the source of the image and the corresponding rights, privileges and usage for each before starting any design work. Specifically, it’s important to determine if an image is royalty-free or licensed as royalty-free generally won’t require payment for usage in design work. A licensed image can have many different types of restrictions or requirements for usage, including the medium, size, frequency, and whether attribution is required.

Below are a list of a few of my favorite/preferred sites I like to use when working on designs:

Stock Photo Sites:

Font Sites:

Other Sites:

  • The Noun Project: http://thenounproject.com/ Mostly used at work this past summer for marketing plans. Features a paid … and FREE … vector-based icons which are great for presentations and projects needing symbols.
  • Infographic Inspiration: http://dailyinfographic.com/ Probably posted elsewhere, but this is a great site for inspiration, especially around infographics.
  • Color Ideas: http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes Can be a great source for color inspiration and sets.
